I played sports all my life and was a PE teacher for 11 years so I’m always on the lookout for the next best sneaker.  For the past month, I’ve been training in a new pair of NB Minimus Trail shoes from New Balance.  I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE them!

I like to train both inside and out during my workouts so my thin little vibrams were just not cutting it anymore, not to  mention how many times I dropped plates on my feet ;) .   These are very lightweight, yet durable and I feel like my feet can breathe in them as opposed to wearing vibrams or other sneakers I’ve had in the past.  I needed a little more support and traction when outside pushing or pulling the sled, jumping rope, sprinting and box jumping.  They are perfect for my morning cardio, walking around town and I even wore them to a Dispatch concert.  We will be going hiking soon in the Santa Monica Mountains so can’t wait to test them out!

I have the grey ones which look so much better on than in the picture and look great with training pants or jeans… …continue reading.

“If you are what you eat and you don’t know what you’re eating, do you know who you are?”

I wanted to share this unique nutrition reference guide I have been reading and using for a while now.   It’s also one of my favorites ;) .  If you are interested in nutrition and care about your health this is a great book to have on your bookshelf. It’s awesome nutrition advice explains the health benefits of “real” whole foods which can help you make better decisions about what you should eat. This book is usually out on our coffee table rather than on the shelf because it is that good :) .  Below is a link where you can find this amazing book so you can have access to it at all times.

I’m heading into week four of my current training program which has me following a lower/upper/lower split three days per week. We set it up like this because my upper body grows a lot faster than my lower body and I’m really trying to bring up my glutes right now which are a major weakness in my physique. A lot of it is due to postural issues but I’m doing the best I can to pack some size on back there!

I have been using a percentage based progression with my main lifts. Also, I’ve been keeping my reps a bit lower on everything else than I had been because Jay said that I’m still a bit neurally inefficient and could use some work in the lower rep ranges for a while.

This was Monday’s Lower Body workout…

Warm up

-Foam roll – 10 min
-Dynamic Exercises: jumping jacks, flings, seal jumps, hip flexion, overhead squats, forward lunge, garland, cat/camel, bird/dog, hip circles, glute bridges

Squat Jumps – 3×5

Squats –
Bar x 10
75 x 5
105 x 5
120 x 3
135 x 3 (went down way too fast)
145 x… …continue reading.

For those of you who don’t know her, I’d like to take a brief moment to introduce my beautiful fiance, Jen Grasso.

During the last 3 1/2 years Jen has basically done an intensive, all encompassing internship at Renegade Strength & Conditioning soaking up everything that I could teach her. Now, obviously there’s no way to absorb all that I’ve learned in the past two decades plus in just that short amount of time but Jen’s done a great job and is always eager to learn more and get better at what she does.

Like me, she’s been obsessed with fitness her whole life and has been training seriously for over 15 years. When we first met she told me she was a certified trainer and I immediately tensed up. The last thing I wanted to do was discuss my underground training methods with someone who was set in their mainstream, 3 sets of 10, cardiokick, chicken and broccoli eating ways. As I always do in such a situation I immediately changed the subject. But since the both of us are so obsessed with training and nutrition the topic kept coming back up.

Luckily, Jen was incredibly open minded and… …continue reading.
