If you are in the LA area this weekend and looking for something to do…
Saturday, September 17 & Sunday, September 18

Since I LOVE to cook, eat and shop locally for our food, this is right up my alley.  Hopefully I’ll be able to pick up a few tips, tricks and maybe even a new cookbook along the way ;) .

There will be two fun-filled days this weekend to experience the Good Food Festival with chef demos from LA’s finest restaurants, guest speakers, workshops, a Localicious Gala and street fair for all ages!  The festivities will start at Santa Monica High School and will feature family farmers, crafty food producers and chefs.  You will be able to enjoy street food from the same vendors you find at the Santa Monica farmers market, browse the food-focused bookstore and purchase green products from any food vendor on site.  In addition, there will be workshops on gardening where you can learn how to grow your own produce from a variety of experts who will demonstrate all you need to know about garden basics.  And finally, there will be Chefs at Play which will feature… …continue reading.

I have received many questions about how and what we eat so I wanted to give you all an inside look at our dinner table.  If you knew me growing up and spent time at our house you would know that I l have learned from the BEST.  I’m a little obsessed with cooking and I like to know exactly how our meals are prepared and need to know the precise amount of natural, organic fixings involved.  Our dinners are made (by me ;) )with locally-sourced, fresh, organic ingredients which we pick up twice a week at the Farmers Market.

I tried to mix it up and make our dishes with lots of different flavors and spices as much as possible so here is an example of what a weekly dinner menu looks like…

Some other favorites dishes are chicken tenders with fresh basil pesto, baked lemon and garlic scallops, turkey meatloaf, Italian seasoned boneless pork chops,  bison meatballs with kelp noodles, and portobello mushroom steaks.  Sides also include (and usually depends on what looks fresh at the market) sauteed rainbow swiss chard, sauteed asparagus and garlic cloves, sauteed spinach, or a… …continue reading.

In case you missed it, I wanted to share a recent interview I did with my good friend Nia Shanks, who is one super strong woman and fitness professional.  You see Nia and I get along very well as we have a lot in common when it comes to training and spreading the word about being STRONG, FEMININE and BEAUTIFUL.  In fact, Nia feels extremely adamant about this that she has worked real hard to put together three compiling and very awe-inspiring editions of the Beautiful Badasses.  I was extremely honored to be a part of this selection of very strong and amazing women :).

Here are the links to Part 1 and 2 of my interview with Nia… hope you all like it!

So I’m sure you are all wondering about Nia’s extraordinary project and what exactly it takes to be a Beautiful Badass.  She could not have explained it any better and I absolutely love her definition of Beautiful Badass: [byoo-tuh-fuhl bad-ass] A female that lifts heavy weights, trains primarily with big compound movements such as deadlifts, squats, presses, rows, and chins; focuses on getting stronger, and warms-up with the weight many guys use as their max. A woman who isn’t afraid…continue reading.

There is nothing more refreshing than drinking the water straight from a coconut and then scooping out the meat when your are finished. So delicious! This is a ritual every week for many as they stroll through the Sunday farmers market .

Since we are living in sunny California, these are not hard to come by and one of the best foods to drink or eat ;) . You can find an abundant supply of these at any raw food restaurant, farmers market or Whole Foods store in the area. There are many health benefits to drinking coconut water and including coconut oil in your diet which you should definitely be aware of.

Here’ s some great info on coconuts from Markus Rothkranz:

“Fresh young coconuts and coconut oil can save your life. Coconut water is identical to human blood plasma. In third world countries it is used as an emergency replacement for IVs. It has strong anti-viral, anti-microbial, anti-yeast and anti-fungal properties. In the Polynesian islands, people used to eat nothing but coconuts, tropical fruits and raw fish. They didn’t get parasites because of the coconut, papaya and papaya seeds in their diet. They also never got fat or had any…continue reading.

My friend Grant Lofthouse, who is a super cool guy and fitness professional, asked to interview me.  You see Grant HATES CARDIO just as much as I do!  Just like me, Grant was always a “gym junkie” and played a sport.  He sustained an injury and bounced back training hard with the weights, not the treadmill. Sounds all too familiar :) .  I was extremely flattered and really had fun with it.  Attached is the link… hope you all like it!

I have recently received a lot of questions about how I eat, my diet and how I incorporate it all into my lifestyle.  In a nutshell, I follow an intermittent fasting and an all natural, organic, high protein, low carb diet, lots of fruits and vegetables using carb cycling during the week and drink lots of water.  This means real, whole, organic foods that you could pick, grow or kill (grass fed beef, free range, organic chicken and eggs, wild caught fish, nuts, seeds, and organic fruits and vegetables).  I also avoid all processed foods, fake foods, food additives, and agricultural chemicals at all cost. I always buy the highest quality foods and never bargain shop for what I put in my body.

For as long as I can remember I always followed an intermittent fasting diet due to my active lifestyle growing up.  My Mom always made dinner late (like 9pm) because that is when my brothers and I were all finished for the day.  My next meal would never be until lunch time the next day (again made by my Mom :) ) because I wasn’t hungry first thing in the morning.  I never… …continue reading.
